Waterless Shampoo

There are two facts about the appearance of your hair. Fact one, it has a greasy look when it’s dirty. Fact two, for various reasons, you can’t always wash it. Maybe you’re running late for school or work. Maybe there is no water for hair washing as can be the case when you’re out camping. Maybe you’re just having a lazy day or not feeling well.

Whatever the reason for not washing your hair, it’s good to have a standby solution to keep it looking clean. That would be a waterless shampoo.

Waterless shampoo functions

The function of a waterless shampoo is to remove the excess oil and dirt from your hair and give it a clean look and feel. It’s a great option when there is no water available for washing your hair. Think about those times when you’ve got to go somewhere right after a long day at work. No time to run home and wash your hair. A waterless shampoo can have your hair looking fresh in no time. A waterless shampoo is also a good option for someone who is bedridden and unable to shower or bathe. Note: for disabled folks, you might want to try the Comfort shower cap. It’s a wash/conditioner shower cap that you heat in the microwave. It’s a good product with high ratings.

Waterless shampoo types

Waterless shampoo can come in a dry or foam variety. The most popular is Bastiste dry shampoo. Out of 126 reviews, 111 people rated it a 4 or 5 star. There are many other brands to try if you feel brave. Some are quite expensive and others are moderately priced.

The biggest drawback to waterless shampoo appears to be the tendency of the product to build up when used in excess. I personally haven’t used any of these products so I don’t have a recommendation. However, I promise to buy one or two and give them a try and let you know what I think. In the meantime, tell us if you’ve used them and how you liked them.

Waterless shampoo you can make at home

Waterless shampoo is really easy to make at home from ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Grind one cup of oatmeal into a powder; add a tablespoon or two of baking soda and a drop of essential oil. Voila! Dry shampoo created. Store it in an airtight container because it will only take one to four teaspoons to clean your hair. Use less for short hair and more if your hair is long. You simply sprinkle the oatmeal waterless shampoo onto your hair, massage into hair for a few minutes to be sure of complete coverage then brush out well. You’ll want to brush your hair over a large towel to avoid a mess.

You can substitute cornmeal for the oatmeal and dry herbs for the essential oil. There are other homemade formulas for waterless shampoo including whipped egg whites, but I like the oatmeal recipe best because oatmeal is very good for skin including the scalp.

Now go have fun and relax.
