Do Pheromones Work?

This is going to be a very short post about a very big subject: pheromones, the chemicals that make us extra sexy. We’ve all heard about the use of pheromone traps to catch insects which usually leads to an unhappy end for the insect. However, the very existence of human pheromones has been hotly debated, let alone discussions regarding their effectiveness. With the discovery of human pheromones, that only left one question. Do pheromones work?

Though this is still debated among scientists, there is mounting evidence that pheromones do indeed work. In 1999, it was discovered that the human brain responded to androstadienone, a hormone found in male sweat. In 2001, another study conducted in Sweden, found that androstadienone and estratetraenol (a hormone found in female urine) had an effect on the hypothalmus.  The interesting part of this experiment was that androstadienone only had an effect on women while androstadienone only affected men.

When I discovered these studies, I decided to look into the hypothalamus and its functions relating to olfactory stimulation (odors). (The hypothalamus is an almond sized gland located underneath the thalamus gland and just above the brain stem.) Guess what? Odors have at least two known effects on the hypothalamus. Those are sex and the interaction of messenger nerve cells which instruct the body to release certain hormone.

The exact mechanism for how pheromones are detected is still largely a mystery. In other animals, there’s a particular group of cells in their noses that are responsible for pheromone detection. However, in humans these cells have not yet been found.

So, do pheromones work? Yes. I dug up a couple of other articles you might want to read.
