Basic Bath Bomb Recipe

A bath bomb is the playmate in your bathwater. They swirl, twist, and fizz while all the time adding fragrance and other benefits for your skin. Below is a basic bath bomb recipe to get you started.

There can be a trick to making a bath bomb come out right. If you make it too dry, it won’t hold together like it should. If you add too much liquid, it’ll fizz in front of your eyes and may never make it to the tub. So, be sure and follow the recipe carefully, but above all, have fun.

What you will need:

    • 1 cup citric acid

  • 2 cups baking soda (Note: Until you get the hang of things you might want to start with ½ cup of citric acid to 1 cup baking soda)
  • Light oil like jojoba (about 1 tablespoon)
  • Soap safe dye colorant (about ½ teaspoon)
  • Fragrant essential oil (few drops)
  • Dome shaped mold

Mix the citric acid and baking soda together VERY WELL. Don’t get lazy here or you can end up with a ruined batch.

Add the wet ingredients to a spray bottle and shake well.

As you whisk the dry ingredients, spray them with the wet ingredients (remember, you’re only adding a small amount of wet ingredients just enough to hold the mixture together.)

Don’t make the mixture too wet or it’ll ruin your batch. Take it slow. Test the mixture by taking some in your hand and squeezing. If it forms a ball without breaking apart, you’re ready to add to mold.

Put bath bomb mixture into a mold and pack tightly or your bomb will fall apart when you remove from mold. Wait a few minutes then tap lightly to remove from mold. Place on paper towel lined cookie sheet. Let dry thoroughly (3 to 4 hours) then place in wrap to keep moisture out.

Note: You can add other ingredients such as Epsom salt  (this is mixed with the wet ingredients before you add anything else) and corn starch (this is mixed with the dry ingredients). The Epsom salt relaxes muscles and the corn starch is good for your skin and gives your bath water a lovely silky feel.

Now have fun and relax.
