It’s summer, at least here in the US, and people are swarming to beaches and parks with bare skin exposed. Some of these folks are going to come home with sunburns. It’s no secret that aloe vera gel has been used for centuries to treat burns, but now, thanks to a group of scientists at the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran, there is evidence that it works better than a commonly used burn medication.
They compared an aloe vera cream to silver sulfadiazine (the tests were for burns from heat only, not chemical burns). The results were striking. The aloe vera cream worked best. What’s really cool (so to speak) is that aloe vera cream isn’t going to produce the side effects possible with the use of silver sulfadiazine.
How to use aloe vera creams and lotions
If the lotion or cream has been mixed properly, you should notice instant relief. Apply whenever you begin to feel pain from the burn. If you want to make a cream for burns click here to create your own cream or lotion. Be sure to select”burns” in the uses menu.
A simple alternative to creams and lotions
This is super simple. You buy some aloe vera gel (make sure it’s from the Aloe barbadensis plant) and mix with distilled water to a spray-able consistency. Then simply spray on the burned part of your body. Keep in mind that when you add water to aloe vera gel, it
becomes spoilable rather quickly. To avoid this problem, mix in small batches and store in the fridge. To give your aloe vera spray an extra benefit, add about 20 drops of pure lavender essential oil to each 4 ounces of spray solution. If you do this, be sure and give your spray a shake or two before spraying. Oil and water don’t mix.
Conclusion – a little motherly advice
In the future remember to put on your sunscreen. If you have children, you have to be diligent in keeping sunscreen on them when they’re out playing in the sun. Ignore any whining because they don’t want lotion on their body. Put it on anyway. They’ll thank you later. No goddess, young or old, should suffer burns.
Important Tip: If the burn is severe, it’s time to see your doctor.
Now go have fun and relax.
