Aloe Vera Gel for Hair

Is aloe vera gel for hair really a good hair treatment? Based on my research, using aloe vera gel for hair has many amazing benefits. Not only will it keep hair healthy and beautiful, it’s also completely safe and natural.

Aloe vera gel can be purchased alone or as a component in the shampoos and rinses you buy. If you’re going to truly test aloe vera gel for hair, use it as a stand alone product. The best test is going to come by using a food grade aloe vera gel since it has the fewest additives. The other alternative is to grow your own aloe Vera and extract the juice yourself.

Aloe vera gel benefits for hair

  • Reduces dandruff: relieves sore, itchy and flaky scalp
  • Nourishes and moisturizes: moisturizes and protects both the hair and scalp leaving it soft and shiny
  • Promotes hair growth: stimulates growth of new and existing hair
  • Prevents hair loss: slows and in some cases prevents hair loss

How to use

You can use aloe vera gel as a hair gel to hold your hair in place. You can also add it directly to your scalp. Aloe vera gel is known for helping your hair grow, make your hair shiny and treat scalp conditions such as dandruff.

The other way you can use aloe vera gel for hair is to mix it with your regular rinse and or shampoo. You can also use it as a hair treatment. One hair treatment that’s popular right now is created by mixing 1 part aloe Vera gel and 1 part honey to 4 parts conditioner. Microwave the mixture a few seconds to make it warm then apply to wet or dry hair making sure the ends are well treated. Cover hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap and let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes up to overnight then rinse hair in warm water (do not shampoo).

What others say about aloe vera gel for hair

Most people that used aloe vera gel for hair were happy with the results and some were euphoric. However, there were a few that said it didn’t do much for their hair. A couple said they didn’t like the smell (that may have been an issue with the brand of aloe vera gel they

purchased). There were also a couple that said it seemed to cause them to shed and discontinued use. From a biological perspective, I don’t understand how aloe vera gel would cause shedding unless it had something to do with other ingredients they were using along with the aloe vera.

I have done extensive research into the science behind aloe vera benefits when used on the skin and taken internally. Lori and I both use aloe vera gel. However, neither Lori nor I have used aloe vera gel for hair, but we’re going to give it a try and we’ll report back here on the results. If you’ve used aloe vera gel for your hair, tell us about your experience.

My conclusion is that Nature outdid herself when she created aloe vera. It’s amazing!

Now go have fun and relax.

  1. I mixed a food grade aloe with some water and a few drops of lavender essential oil for a leave in hair detangler for me and my daughters. We all have natural darker blonde hair coloring. After about a week several friends commented how the girls have a yellowish blonde color to their hair. I also see stains on their sheets as we go to bed with wet hair. I have a good water softner so i conclude aloe must stain blonde hair??? Now i did a malibi treatment and the stained color is still there…has anyone else had this issue? Any thoughts on a non staining diy hair detangler?

    1. Hi Shelly,
I’ve never used aloe vera as a detangler however, I have used it as a rinse on my blonde hair with no ill effects. I noticed one person who is selling an aloe vera detangler on Etsy and she uses aloe vera juice. You might try that. There are other homemade detanglers you can also try. I found three recipes at . I hope this helps.

  2. I have scalp psoriasis and was wondering if I could just simply massage aloe gel onto my scalp, cover with a shower cap, and leav in over night then wash out in the morning.

  3. Hi iv purchased the 99% aloe vera gel from hill and Barrett and used it only once on my hair I just wanted to verify is this gel okay to use on the hair and how much coconut oil should I mix with the aloe vera gel if I don’t want to apply the aloe vera gel on its own. Please help me.

  4. hello goodevening 🙂 i was wondering if isit okay to use aloe vera at rebonding> like example 1 day after my hair rebonding and i can’t wash my hair because its a 3 days rule but i want my hair to use aloe vera overnight but i will not wash my hair on the next day. is it okay?

  5. Can i use aloevera juice instead of gel for hairgrowth? Can i put it on the scalp overnight? Is it ok to use it daily?

  6. Hi
i am suffering from alopecia.please give me the directions of using aloe vera gel on my hair.should i apply it on wet hair or after drying it?should i use it daily?

  7. I’m currently growing out my hair which had a lot of bleached streaks, leaving it (of course) frizzy, dry and ‘crunchy’.

No matter what moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and serums I’d use, nothing worked; it remained frizzy, dry and crunchy.

Until today when I had one of those light-bulb moments.

I have a big jar of aloe vera gel which only contains a thickener (carbomer) and a ‘non-formaldehyde releasing’ preservative, so I put a little on my fingertips and stroked it through the driest parts of my (clean, dry) hair and left it to air dry.

Blew me away. Those dry, frizzy sections look and feel almost like virgin hair now. It’s full of bounce, body and shine as though I’d never bleached it.

    Bye, bye expensive hair serums!

Why on earth I never thought of this before is beyond me, but I’m so glad I thought of it today. I’ve often slathered it on dry hands before applying moisturizer and it works a charm, so it stands to reason it would do wonders for woefully bleached hair.

  11. hi,

I use aloe vera gel that says 99.9% aloe vera. I apply a little amount all over my scalp after shampoo and then leave it for next three days until my next shampoo or sometimes for a week. is this method of using aloe vera is safe? Please respond, I should also mention, I live in Winnipeg where 8 months we have snow so its very cold.

  12. Hi.
Well, I’ve started using pure aloevera gel from the plant on my hair as a shampoo because it is said that aloevera gel washes the hair and has also many benefits, right? But after washing with aloevera my hair becomes too oily!! I dont know why! I thought it would wash my hair but instead it makes it even more oilier. Is it because of the fact that my hair is still getting used to the transition from shampoo to another substance? Well I’m thinking it’s beauce of that so i’m still gonna use aloevera to see if the oil starts to disappear. I don’t know how long will this transition take but I hope it’s not for too long because i’ve washed it twice with aloevera and it’s already too oily!!

  15. Hi. I want to use aloe vera gel from the plant as a hair treatment and I read on 2 websites that I should not use any oil after you used the aloe vera. So I wanted to know why that is and also how long after can I use oil?

  16. I have over thirty plants of Aloe Vera in my garden. I drink Aloe Vera Juice almost every day before breakfast. I used natural Aloe Vera gel on my hair 3-4 times a week for the past three months. I noticed that I have thicker hair, but nothing magical. Just little more hair, which I am happy about. So, I will continue. Maybe I should use caster oil few times a week as well, which would strengthen the new hair.

  17. I have started using aloe vera gel in my scalp. my question to you is, is it okay to shampoo after using aloe vera gel or I shouldn’t use shampoo and conditioner? May I know your suggestions on that, please?

    1. The best thing is to leave it on your hair for few hours to overnight and then shampoo your hair as usual.

  18. For how many minutes should the aloe vera gel be left on hair?should i wash my hair when its wet or when it becomes dry

  22. Hi can I use alovera gel to my hair daily? If I m not washing by using shampoo and anything simply I am washinh my hair. Whther I am doing properly?

    1. Hi there Guest,
The answer to your first question is yes it’s safe to use aloe vera in your hair every day. As for your second question, I don’t really understand what your asking. Do you mean you are just rinsing your hair and not using any shampoo?

If that’s the question, only you can answer that because it depends on how oily or dry your hair is and the condition of your scalp. I can tell you that shampoos and rinses are a fairly recent addition to hair care products. Before soaps and shampoos, at first rinsing with plain water was the only option. Later various other ingredients were added such as herbs, oils, rice, egg and vinegar.

  24. Hello i m roop i did use aloe on my rebonded hair but after use hair dry. What i do for straight aur shine hair.can i use aloe vera on my hair give me ans plz

  25. Please, Please help I was diagnosis with androgenic alopecia. All I need to know is can I mix aloe vera jucie and water daily without washing it out as a daily moisturizer?

    1. Hi Guest,

      Short answer: Yes

Longer answer: You might want to find out what is causing the problem. It’s often thought as a genetic problem about which you can do nothing, but research links several factors having nothing to do with genetics. The best treatment can only be determined when the cause of the ailment is known. Don’t settle for the simple diagnosis, find the cause.

  26. Continuation of d above comment Im having ferrobiotron..n calcium osteocare..doctr told jus a mild infection..bt no medicine s treating my prblm..so iwantf to use aloevera..

    1. Hi there Guest,

I’m so sorry you’re having problems. Life seems to dish them out periodically just to test us.

I’m no doctor, but I do know that both anemia and calcium deficiency can cause hair loss. So, my guess is that one or the other is the real culprit, not the dandruff.

You may well find that your dandruff problem will improve significantly once the internal problems are resolved. However, aloe vera certainly won’t hurt. Try mixing aloe vera gel in with your rinse. Another alternative would be to treat your scalp with am anti-dandruff shampoo and rinse. We have suggestions on the post: http://www.spafromscratch.com/attacking-dandruff/

In addition to this, make sure you’re eating a healthy diet. What you eat and drink is reflected throughout your body including your hair.

Good luck and be sure and report back on how you’re doing.

  27. I have extreme dandruff..since 6 months..I have to take shower daily cz of ths
Plus m loosing hairs cz of dandruff..its dry dandruff..I tried evrythng bt nthng wrk
Iwanted to use aloe vera gel..I have sensitive scalp..pls suggest me how to use aloe vera aftr shampoo…shd I apply directly? Or mix wid curd n apply n rinse it widout shampoo??

    1. Hi there Guest,

The first thing you should do is find out why you’re losing hair and have a dandruff problem. Causes can range anywhere from stress and or diet, to certain physical ailments and hormone imbalances. The best treatment comes from an understanding of what is causing the malady.

That said, you can apply aloe vera directly to your scalp and leave it there. I would suggest washing your hair first with a mild shampoo to allow better penetration of the aloe vera.

For a leave in rinse, add equal parts aloe vera to water and massage this leave in rinse into your hair focusing on your scalp.

      1. Hi. I have the same problem like you. Itchy, oily, dandruff and hair loss. Then i tried hair treatment with apple cider vinegar and it reduces dandruff like 80% but didnt help much in haor growth. Then i used aloe vera to clean my scalp. I do this treatment 4 times a week and results were excellent. Then i reduced the treatment to once a week after 3month. Try apply raw aloe vera, fresh picked from the plant itself. Dont use high chemical shampoo in the process. Hope this help

  28. Afte rinsin the aloe vera from hair….its sticky gel still remains on hair…so can I use mild shampoo to
to remove the sticky gel from the hair…?

    1. Hi there Guest,

In answer to your question, yes you can shampoo.

It sounds like the aloe product you are using contains the latex portion of the plant. Next time you purchase aloe vera be sure it has very low to no latex.

    1. Hi there Guest,

Yes you can shampoo after using aloe vera. Try using the aloe vera after you shampoo then just rinse in plain water.

  29. Hi, i am rohit. i am male, 32 and losing hair, in last 4 years, lost almost 50% hair. and going bald. how can i use aloe vera gel. Doctor said water was the issue in my area. My hair were good in india, once i came to Australia, my hair started to fall. Due to some wrong habits of early age, it could also have been a factor. But how can i regrow my hair now.

    please guide.

i use egg in hair once a month, and different oils also on hair once in two weeks. but it is not affecting that much.

    1. Hi there Rohit,

I need a little more information. Is your hair coming out in patches or is it thinning equally all over your head? What is in your water that caused the doctor to think that might behe cause? What did you do when you were younger that you think may be factor in your hair loss? (To protect your privacy, you can e-mail that answer to vp@spafromscratch.com.) Are you currently living under a great deal of stress?

Answer the questions and and maybe I can offer some helpful suggestions. In the meantime, remember your hair does not define you in any way.

      Vic

    1. Hi again,
I’ve been pondering why you might be having a problem with hair loss and thought of something worth checking out. You might want to get checked for heavy metals. Your doctor can order the test. A lead build up in your system can cause hair loss. Thalium can also be a culprit.

      Love,
      Mama Vic
