Cat Treat Recipes for Kitty’s Spa Day

Somehow the idea of a cat having a spa day sounds dangerous. After all, most cats are equipped with 20 daggers, a set of very sharp teeth and an inherent knowledge on how to disburse pain. If one member of your family is a cat, you are probably already aware that she sees you as privileged to serve her every emotional and physical need.

A spa day for your cat should include brushing, nail trimming if necessary, a dry shampoo and more brushing. All that is followed by her having delicious and healthy treats to savor. I’ve provided you with a couple of recipes to make her treats.

Fishy Cat Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 tin sardines in oil (7 oz or 200g)
  • 1/4 dry non-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ

Instructions:

1.  Preheat oven 350 F (175C)

2.  Grease cookie sheet lightly

3.  Mash sardines then mix all ingredients together in bowl. When mixed well, measure out mixture by ½ teaspoon portions on cookie sheet and flatten with a fork.

4.  Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until they turn golden brown.

5.  Remove from oven and place on cooling rack to cool completely.

6.  When cool, place in airtight container.

I like this recipe because it doesn’t contain flour or corn, neither of which a cat would be caught dead eating naturally. If you think about it a bit, the only grains a cat would normally eat come predigested in the intestinal tract of rodents and birds.

In the above recipe, you can substitute tuna or salmon in oil, but I would suggest grinding these fish as they won’t mash well for you.

The next recipe is also great and it’s super easy.

No Bakeums Cat Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 can tuna or ¾ cup canned salmon (drained) or two small jars of strained beef, chicken, turkey or lamb baby food
  • ¾ cup cooked brown rice
  • 2 Tbsp. whole-wheat flour
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. water or broth, if needed

Instructions:

1.  Mix fish and or meat with rice.

2.  Add flour and mix by hand or in food processor.

3.  Roll mixture into small balls (if it’s too dry, add enough water to make it sticky enough to hold together) and place on waxed paper.

4.  Keep enough balls out to last 3 days and store the rest in the freezer in an airtight container.

NOTE: A trick I learned a long time ago is to put the balls on a plate and place in freezer. Set timer for an hour or two so you don’t forget about them. When frozen, place in baggie. That makes it easy to pop a few out of the bag and into the fridge for defrosting.

Just these two cat treat recipes will save you a lot of money if you’ve been in the habit of buying your cat commercially produced treats. Other cat treat recipes call for cups of corn meal and wheat which is baked. You can easily find them online if you’re interested.

Now you know how to make the perfect cat treat to embellish your majesty’s spa day. She may even give you a purr or two as her way of telling you that you’ve been a good servant. No wonder the ancient Egyptians worshiped cats. Some pharaoh’s cat way on back there probably put the pharaoh in his place.

Now go have fun and relax.
