Healthy Doggie Spa Day Treats

I was just checking the ingredients on a box of dog treats that are supposed to be good for my little Yorkie, Misty. The unhealthy ingredients include bacon fat (nitrites), sodium metabisulphite (preservative), artificial sausage flavor (synthetic chemical), red 40, blue 1, yellow 6 and yellow 5. That’s too much bad stuff. From now on she’s getting healthy treats. You can bank on it that I will be reading the ingredient list very carefully from now on.

The following cheese dog treat recipe I found on line. Originally it called for bacon bits, but I eliminated that ingredient. I think Misty will love these cheese cookie dog treats and they will be an awesome and healthy doggie spa day snack. I don’t particularly like the amount of sugar in the first recipe, but it is only ½ cup in 3 cups of dry ingredients. That’s not too bad.

Cheese Cookie Dog Treat recipe

Ingredients:

Directions:

Cream the butter and sugar together.

Add egg and milk and beat well.

Mix dry ingredients together well then add to bowl containing butter, sugar, egg and milk. Mix well until you have smooth dough.

Load dough into a cookie press and squeeze treats onto greased cookie sheet. Practice on a few until you get the right shape and size. Don’t make them too fat or they won’t harden.

Bake at 300 degrees for 30 – 45 minutes. Watch carefully after 30 minutes to avoid burning.

Once treats are brown, turn the oven off and leave treats in oven overnight.

Roll onto floured board and cut into shapes.

Bake for 15 minutes of until slightly brown and firm. (Makes about 2 to 3 dozen)

Later I’m going to give the peanut butter dog treats a try. Misty is very fond of peanut butter, almost as much as she’s fond of cheese. If you have any dog treat recipes that have made your puppy happy, tell us about it. Share a recipe you think will make the perfect doggie spa day treat.

Now go have fun and relax.
