Homemade potpourri is an absolutely wonderful way to keep your home delightfully fragrant. There are many ways it can be used. You can use it dry in a decorative bowl in the bathroom, kitchen, dining room table, office, or anywhere you choose. Depending on the colors, the potpourri itself can be ornamental as well as offering fragrance. You can use a plain glass bowl filled with a colorful potpourri as an artfully (and fragrant) decorative addition to your home.
You can also simmer a potpourri in a crock pot or on the stove under low heat and fill your house with the essence of summer, spring, fall, or winter. It’s up to you. Just don’t forget to turn it off when you leave the house or go to bed or you may end up with potpourri flambé. Not good.
You can, of course, buy potpourri ready made, but it’s way too much fun to make your own. You can buy individual packages of the specific dried flowers and herbs you choose or you can dry them yourself. Select flowers and herbs that are fresh and fragrant. Pick them with care so as not to bruise them and dry carefully so they don’t spoil.
When creating a potpourri, it’s important to note that you will need to add a fixative to stabilize the mix so the evaporation rate scents are reduced. If you are following a potpourri recipe, there will be a fixative included. However, if you are creating your own recipe, you will need to select a fixative. One of the most commonly used fixatives is Orris root. There are many others, but for now let’s make our homemade potpourri.
The Scent of Summer
2 cups Orris root
1 cup Myrtle
1 cup White gomphrena
1 cup Rose petals
1 cup Rose hips
Add enough strawberry oil to moisten the Orris, but not saturate it. Then add all the ingredients together. Any potpourri you are not using should be placed in tightly sealed bags and stored in a dark place.
Enjoy the scent of summer all year round with this homemade potpourri recipe. Because we love the aroma and look of potpourri, we will be posting several recipes. Imagine a different potpourri for every room in you house. How beautiful!
Now go relax and have fun.
