Tea Tree Oil for Acne – Easy Gel Recipe

If you’re using benzoyl peroxide to treat acne, you’re not doing your skin any favors. In fact, it dries and damages skin and can actually make acne worse.

Why not switch to tea tree oil for acne and get all the benefits with few if any side effects?

In a study done by the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, NSW, compared a 5% tea tree gel to a 5% benzoyl

peroxide lotion. The results demonstrated that both the benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil gel produced significant results in reducing acne lesions. Though the tea tree oil gel was slower to act, there were fewer side effects.

Using tea tree oil for acne with aloe vera gel is a winning combination. Aloe vera gel is noted for its ability to nourish and heal the skin, as well as prevent scarring.

  1. I don’t know if I didn’t put enough amount of aloe vera gel but it burned my skin and I teared up after 3 minutes so I had to go and wash it off :<
Guess I'll need to put a moderate amount of this next time…

    1. Some people are sensitive to tea tree oil. Try a spot of the formula on the inside of one elbow to test for sensitivity. If you have no reaction, perhaps there was an error in your formula that threw the ratio of tea tree to aloe vera off. If not, cut the tea tree oil back to 1/2 teaspoon to 9 teaspoons aloe vera. Sometimes it’s necessary to tweak formulas to the needs of an individual.

Be sure and check back with us and let us know how it went.

  2. When my son turned 15 he really started to break out. I made a batch of this gel to try. It worked so well that now all of the neighborhood teens are asking for it. The pimples just seem to fade away. The added perk: This is all natural with no harsh chemicals.

      1. 9 teaspoons (3 tablespoons)aloe gel
        1 teaspoon tea tree oil

It should last a long time due to the antibacterial nature of tea tree oil, but I would store it in the fridge.

  3. I put a bit of tea tree oil on my pimples and it’s quite good at calming down the redness and helping the healing process. Only you need to put moderate amount of tea tree oil to prevent dryness of the skin.

    1. Thank you for your comment. You’re absolutely right, the recipe isn’t a 5% solution that the study used. Instead we used a 10% solution or 10% tea tree oil X 50 ml total blend = 5 ml of tea tree oil to 45ml of aloe Vera gel. If you want a 5% solution, that would be 5% tea tree oil X 50ml total blend = 2.5ml of tea tree oil to 47.5ml of aloe Vera gel.
