The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Mother’s Day is just around the corner for many countries around the world. It’s a time to express our love and appreciation for the most important woman in our lives. Let’s face it, without our mothers having and caring for us there would be no us to celebrate anything. Our moms definitely deserve a special day complete with the perfect Mother’s Day gift. Just what that gift is will depend on a number of variables from the geographic location of the kids to their ages. In addition to the most traditional gifts, this post will offer unique ideas you may not have considered.

In the U.S., it’s not only the kids that give Mother’s Day gifts. Husbands often present their wives with Mother’s Day gifts. Mothers often give a Mother’s Day gift to their daughters who are also mothers. It’s not uncommon for friends to give gifts to their friends on this day as a sign of love, affection and appreciation even if the friend is not a mother. The most common gifts are flowers and candy. Let’s take a quick look at flowers first.

Flowers

Carnations

If you give a bouquet of pink, light red and dark red carnations, each color is symbolic as is the flower itself.

  • Carnation: The flower is a symbol of love
  • Pink carnation: The symbol of a mother’s love.
  • Dark red carnation: The symbol of love and affection.
  • Light red carnation: The symbol of admiration
  • White carnation: The symbol of admiration and luck. I did not add white to the     recommended bouquet above because in some cultures the white carnation is presented to honor mother’s that have died.

Roses

Roses, like carnations are a favorite Mother’s Day gift and like the carnation, the colors you choose for your bouquet will represent a specific sentiment.

  • Pink rose – The best color for a child to give his or her mother is pink in that it symbolizes love, admiration and appreciation.
  • Red rose – The color of passion and an excellent color from husbands to wives.
  • Lilac and purple – These colors are also great husband to wife choices in that they represent enchantment and love.
  • Yellow rose – This is a great color to give a friend as it represents friendship and joy.

Blue flowers

Blue flowers make wonderful Mother’s Day gifts in that they portray a mother’s trustworthiness and her unifying effect on the family.

Whatever flowers you choose, make sure and attach a note explaining the significance of the flower and its color as she may not be aware of that aspect of your gift.

If the mother in your life is allergic to flowers, you can substitute a bouquet of lovely silk flowers. Good quality silk flowers will give her months of joy in that every time she looks at them she will be reminded of how much you care for her.

Candy

In addition to flowers, there’s the option of giving a Mother’s Day gift of candy. Chocolates are a favorite and the best quality chocolates will usually be found in a candy store, but they will be quite pricey. If you can afford it, that’s the way to go. If not, she will appreciate a box of Ghirardelli, Sees or Whitman chocolates.

If you know the mother in your life is particularly fond of a specific candy, substitute that candy or give it in addition to the chocolates. That will send her the message that you were thinking of her as a special person in your life.

Spa Day

Another great gift for Mother’s Day is a gift certificate for her own special spa day adventure. If she’s never enjoyed the indulgence of a spa, you may want to consider going with her or having a close friend go with her, otherwise, she may never use the gift and that would be sad.

In lieu of a spa gift certificate, arrange a spa party of two; just you and your mom or you, your mom and a few of her friends. This is a great way to have a relaxing fun day with your mom. A spa party day is the perfect gift from daughters to their mothers. Hint: This also makes a great birthday gift.

Gift Basket

Gift baskets are another great option for Mother’s Day. Remember, the “basket” can be everything from a real basket to a decorative flower pot. You can always purchase a ready made gift basket, but why not make it yourself and add the items you know your mom will enjoy. For instance, let’s say your mom loves to garden and loves chocolate. You can add a beautiful plant for her garden and chocolates in a colorful garden flower pot. That way the basket is unique to the one mom you are honoring.

Mother’s Day dinner

Another great way to honor your mom this Mother’s Day is to take her to dinner. Be sure and take her to a restaurant that serves something she particularly enjoys. As an alternative to going out, you can cook her favorite dish at home. Just make sure you also do the clean up afterward. This is a project where whole family can get involved, including dad.

Gifts of service

Gifts of service are fabulous when money is short. Be her maid, cook, lawn care person, tree trimmer or whatever fulfills her needs or wishes. These gifts offer the added benefit of extra time with her if you are an adult and your mom doesn’t live with you. Sometimes gifts of service are the most appreciated.

Whatever you choose as a Mother’s Day gift make it a statement of your love because love is what makes the world go round. Personal notes expressing your feelings for your mom should always be a part of any gift. Long after the gift is gone your note to her will be tucked safely away and cherished for as long as she lives.

Now go have fun and relax.
